THE DANUBE SALMON

Hucho-hucho fly fishing

When the leaves begin to fall in beginning of October it usually signals the beginning of the yearly chase for the king of Slovenian rivers the Danube Salmon also know as the huchen. The huchen is the largest non-migrating salmonid species found in the world. It is considered one of the most prized fishing targets in Europe if not the world.

In most waters of Slovenia a guide is needed for getting permission to fish for Danube Salmon. Fishing also has to be done in pairs for safety reasons.

The huchen seasons starts on most rivers on the first of October and ends on February 14th.

Huchen fly fishing is anything but easy, especially when winter conditions set in. Heavy snowfall, rain, ice, cold waters, low temperatures, rising water levels, heavy tackle all test the anglers limits. To top this huchen are very selective feeders so there can pass days on end without any huchen activity.

That is why it is especially important to have a local guide that can put you in the right spot at the right time to increase your chances.

Special emphasis has to be put on  the fishing equipment. High quallity waders and boots (felt if possible) are must as well as good winter layers, waterproof jackets etc. The rods and reels must also be suited for casting heavy sinking lines and large flies. For fly rods a ten weight is a minimum requirement. Heavy stout double handed rods also work well.

The angler has to be in good physical shape as long walks between pools in the snow test the body and soul. Casting large flies for days on end with heavy fishing equipment can cause shoulder problems or tennis elbow so some prior exercise to the trip will benefit you.

Today most huchen are released after being caught unlike years before when all were taken out of their kingdom. Most of the fish after being caught are photographed and shared in the local fishing community as identification as some of these fish have been caught multiple times in the past decade. The huchen population is at an all time high. But fishing pressure has made them more cautious then ever before. So if you want to test your fly fishing skill get in contact with us for a guided trip and we will do our best to get you in contact with the king of Slovenian rivers.
