From summer conditions to the first real taste of autumn
September started with beautiful, sunny weather and conditions that still felt more like summer than autumn. Warm days, bright skies and relatively low, clear water made fishing challenging at times, particularly during the middle of the day when trout and grayling became cautious.
Despite the low water conditions, the Soča River continued to produce some very good fishing. The crystal-clear water made fish highly visible but also extremely wary, requiring careful approaches, long leaders and accurate presentations. Sight fishing remained one of the highlights, with marble trout, rainbow trout and grayling providing some excellent opportunities.

As the month progressed, everything began to change.
Rain brings the rivers back to life
The biggest change came during the middle of September, when several periods of rain finally brought much-needed water into the rivers.
The difference was remarkable.
Water levels increased, temperatures dropped and the rivers became more dynamic. Conditions improved significantly across several of Slovenia’s best fly-fishing rivers, including the Soča, Idrijca and Sava Bohinjka.
The additional water made fish considerably more active, while the cooler conditions brought the rivers firmly into their autumn rhythm.
The Idrijca River was particularly enjoyable, offering a mixture of marble trout, rainbow trout and grayling in its runs and faster water. The river is well known for continuing to offer good opportunities for experienced anglers in spring and autumn.
On the Sava Bohinjka, the arrival of cooler autumn conditions also brought noticeably better fish activity. Grayling and rainbow trout are important targets on the river during autumn, with the changing conditions often creating excellent opportunities for lighter presentations and dry-fly fishing.
Autumn arrives on the Soča
The Soča was arguably the biggest story of the month.
Early September still demanded a summer approach: low water, bright sunshine and exceptionally clear conditions meant that fish could be difficult to approach. After the first rain, however, cooler temperatures and increased flows transformed the river.
The water temperature dropped, fish became more active and feeding periods became noticeably longer. The combination of autumn weather, increased water and reduced summer pressure created some of the most enjoyable Soča River fly fishing of the month.
For anglers targeting marble trout in Slovenia, this transition into autumn is particularly exciting. The Soča Valley’s famous marble trout share the river with grayling and rainbow trout, making the area one of the country’s most diverse fly-fishing destinations.
Looking ahead to October
September ended on a very positive note, and the rivers are now firmly moving into autumn conditions.
With water temperatures falling and fish activity increasing, October is one of the most exciting periods of the season for fly fishing in Slovenia. The crowds of summer are gone, the mountains begin to take on their autumn colours, and the cooler water can bring some excellent fishing conditions.
The Soča, Idrijca and Sava Bohinjka should all remain interesting as October progresses, although conditions can change quickly depending on rainfall and water levels.
We are looking forward to seeing what October brings.
